The Mary Astor Blogathon

I became a Mary Astor fan in my teens after watching both The Maltese Falcon and Across the Pacific (both made in 1941) during the same weekend, loving both her dramatic side and her playful flair for comedy.  She made her film debut in an uncredited bit part in the silent film Bullets or Ballots (1921), and got her first screen credit in the 1920 Buster Keaton comedy The Scarecrow.  Her most iconic film role was surely her unforgettable performance as the duplicitous yet irresistible Brigid O’Shaughnessy in writer/director John Huston’s film version of Dashiell Hammett’s 1930 novel The Maltese Falcon.  Even Mary’s fascinating 1987 New York Times obituary had been quick to mention her indelible role in the film.

Mary’s film career blossomed with silent films starring John Barrymore, but it wasn’t all glamour and accolades.  Born Lucile Vasconcellos Langhanke on May 3rd, 1915 in Quincy, Illinois, Mary’s parents knew talent when they saw it, and they were quick to use their beautiful young daughter’s assets — “use” being the operative word in every way, until Mary had no choice but to put her money-mad parents on an allowance.  Mary wasn’t afraid to be candid about her tumultuous life over the years.  In real life, she’d been through enough tragedy and controversy for any number of movie dramas, including an unfair custody battle for her young child; the sorrow of her director lover getting killed in a plane crash; overcoming alcoholism later in life.  But of course, there were triumphs in her 43-year film career, too, particularly her Best Supporting Actress Oscar in 1941 in the drama The Great Lie as selfish, egocentric pianist Sandra Kovak, opposite Bette Davis as good-girl Maggie Patterson!  Later, our Ms. Astor wrote highly-praised fiction and nonfiction books, in one of her two autobiographies, including My Story (1959), in which Mary overcame alcoholism.  Ever candid, Mary admitted in her two memoirs, she’d admitted, “If I’d had my druthers, I would have preferred getting my Oscar for The Maltese Falcon.”  Who can blame her?  That’s another thing I like about her:  she spoke her mind.  If this isn’t a woman worthy of her own Blogathon, I don’t know who is!,

Mary Astor Blogathon
May 3rd through May 10th, 2013
Co-Hosted by: Dorian Tenore-Bartilucci of Tales of the Easily Distracted
and R.A. Kerr of Silver Screenings.

This wouldn’t be strictly a CMBA blogathon, but simply a fun, casual affair open to all who love Mary's movies, and wish to participate.

While we won't keep people from doing the same films, we will let everyone know what films have been "taken" on this page, so you can keep track. For those of you who need a crib sheet on Ms. Astor's work, here's a link to her IMDB page.

To sign up, either leave a comment below, or contact either myself, Dorian Tenore-Bartilucci or R.A. Kerr to ask any questions!

    2. It's a fantastic episode specifically because of Astor's characterization of an aging film star in a very precarious situation. I did a feature on it at the drive in a while back. Can't wait to see your post... This is great fun... thanks to the lovable Dorian

    1. Hey, Chick, you can still write about THE GREAT LIE if you want to even though R.A. got first dibs. Everyone approaches the same movies filtered through their own viewpoint, and we've all agreed that would be OK for the Blogathon. Think about it and let us know; we'd love to see your take on this Oscar-winner!

  9. Hey, Chick, I have good news and bad news:
    1) My co-hostess R.A. Kerr of Silver already has dibs on THE GREAT LIE. BUT...

    2) The GOOD news is that we're NOT keeping folks from doing the same films, so if you still want THE GREAT LIE anyway, it's OK with us, as long as you don't mind that R.A. is doing her own spin on THE GREAT LIE as well. Besides, everyone always has their own spin on our favorite films anyway, right? We're letting all you lovely participants know what films have been "taken" on this page, so everyone can keep track. Please let us know what you think; you know we love A PERSON IN THE DARK, and we're thrilled to have you in our Blogathon!

    1. Dorian - since it has already been scooped up, how about "Holiday"?

    2. Chick, is Mary Astor in HOLIDAY? I didn't see her name in the IMDb. But you know, you can still use one of your other favorite Astor movies if you want to, since R.A. and I have agreed it's OK for bloggers to blog about the same films, since we'll all have different viewpoints on them. Please let us know; we wouldn't want you to miss out on the Blogathon fun!

      Delete
    3. Aha! FlickChick, NOW I realize there are 2 different movies titled HOLIDAY: one stars our gal Mary Astor in 1930, and the other one stars Cary Grant and Katharine Hepburn in 1938. So sorry, my mistake! So I'm not perfect; don't let it get around! :-) Anyway, Chick, unless I've missed something, the 1930 version of HOLIDAY with Mary is now all yours! Quick, grab it before someone else grabs it! :-D

  11. What a great idea, Dorian and R.A.!. I love Mary Astor in pretty much anything and it'd be a lot of fun to pay her tribute. Has anyone snatched up Act of Violence? Here's the text:

Since I'm not sure when I'll be able to get ahold of Hush, Hush, Sweet Charlotte (Ms. Astor's last film), I'm signing up for John Ford's The Hurricane (although if it's in the South Pacific, isn't that a typhoon? Anyway...), which features sexy Mary (wasn't she involved in some scandals?) in a supporting role.
      Thanks for setting this up!
      Ivan"

Thanks for the heads-up, Ivan! Sorry you've been having trouble getting into our TotED blog, but whether you opt for THE HURRICANE or you manage to find HUSH HUSH...SWEET CHARLOTTE, we'll be happy to have you join our Blogathon! But whatever you choose, it'll be a joy to read, as your posts always are!

Also, anyone here who's stumped as to what to blog about may want to click on our link to Mary Astor's filmography from the IMDb. Fear not, my friends, there's something in the Blogathon for everyone!

  22. I think it's great that you are doing a blogathon in Mary's honor. She's a gal I (and I'm sure many others) don't know all that well. These blogathons give us all an opportunity to get to know some of the "lesser-knowns" a bit better. The "famous" names don't really need the love and attention the way the "lesser-knowns do."

That said, I will not be involved as a participant, as the only movies I would write about are already taken. Plus, I just caught "Dodsworth" for the first time last week and am already in the midst of writing a review of that one. I will definitely be involved as a reader, though, and I look forward to getting to know Mary a bit better.

On another note, I caught her in a Robert Wagner movie "A Kiss Before Dying" several months ago, and I was grieved. I don't think she aged very well, and it broke my heart to see her.

  33. Gosh, what a response!
I've only recently discovered Blogathons and can't wait to read all the posts.
So many of Mary's films I haven't seen.
All I could think of in the way of an article is two films in which Mary only had one scene, but made such an impression - ANY NUMBER CAN PLAY and ACT OF VIOLENCE. Unfortunately, I only have the former.

Incidentally, I am a recently new blogger and ,my computering skills are limited. What is the procedure for submitting an article to you?

    1. Vienna, happy to hear from you! I take it you're a JOHNNY GUITAR fan? Sterling Hayden had always been one of our family's faves!

I've heard of your blog VIENNA'S CLASSIC HOLLYWOOD, and I'm delighted to meet you and have you take part in our Mary Astor Blogathon! You're welcome to blog about either one of these films, as long as our gal Mary Astor is in the the cast! :-) My husband Vinnie and I sometimes take turns blogging here at TALES OF THE EASILY DISTRACTED (TotED for short), so if you've got a nifty idea to be a guest blogger here sometime, we'd be glad to have you as our special guest star, and send a little blog love to you and VIENNA'S CLASSIC HOLLYWOOD for all to enjoy! And of course, we're looking forward to whatever film Mary Astor film you decide on, too! Thanks for joining the Blogathon fun!

    1. Vienna, we of the Mary Astor Blogathon keep things simple. All you have to do is write your blog post about whatever Mary Astor film you want to write about. No hoops to jump through, just blog! :-)

The Blogathon starts on May 3rd (Mary Astor's 107th birthday) and continues through May 10th. My co-hostess R.A. Kerr and I will soon be putting everyone's name (for example, "Vienna" :-)) on a list of Blogathon participants and the films they're blogging about. If you have further questions or suggestions, let us know. Looking forward to yours and everyone else's Blogathon posts!

  37. Dorian, we have a problem. Here in Brazil I can't find a DVD of Don Juan, like there is from Warner Archive there in the US. It's not online (only the versions of 1934 and 1994) and my torrent download s stuck at 7% I'll do my best to make the download faster, but if it doesn't end in time, could I write about Romance of the Underworld (1928)? I'll watch Don Juan anyway when it's completed, but just in case!
    Kisses!

  38. Ruth and Dorian, I posted here back in March to say I'd write about 'Romance of the Underworld' (1928), and you said that was fine, but I see it's not included in the 'gang so far' list above - could you add it into the list please?

Thanks so much, looking forward to it!

  39. PS just realised you may not have added me because I hadn't named a particular date - any date is fine with me :)

  40. Dorian, I tried to leave a comment earlier saying I'd offered to do 'Romance of the Underworld' but wasn't on the list, but please don't worry about it as Ruth is now adding it to the list for me and I'll be posting on May 7! Looking forward to the blogathon. I see Le might now be doing the same film but I'm sure our takes will be different and look forward to reading her posting. Judy
